CHAPTER TEN

TRISHA

Mornings come with a slice of hope dangling above your eyes in the first moment you open them. It is the quality of hope to be abstract, intangible and always out of reach but each time, you’re reminded of what is possible. In this case, the possibility is the return of my sanity. In the chaos that followed the slump of Levi’s mother, I found stability, not in her son, but in her granddaughter.

Sharon’s approach to life is simply infectious. She grabbed life by the neck and squeezed, unaware of what was possible and what was not. I have chosen to adopt her style of living and to think of life as one giant slice of possibility and hope. Her smile makes me smile; when she laughs, you’re pulled into it without knowing how or why. So, in the past few days, while Levi rides off to the hospital, I come over to care for little Sharon, and in caring for her, I have given her permission to care for me.

Who would have thought the smile of a child was all I needed to find myself, to wheel my heart out of the doghouse, and to heal from the hurt and the pains I have nursed for so long.

“Trisha, thank you,” Levi called as I left the house the other night. He had just returned from the hospital on the third day since his mother’s health caused us all a scare. I nod, grab my coat off the rack, and slip out of the building. Sarah was waiting outside the threshold for me.

“You’re welcome,” I replied, but that wasn’t what I really wanted to say. I wanted to ask how he was feeling, I wanted to stretch my hand and smooth away the wrinkles gathering on his forehead. I wanted to kiss him, to hold his head against my breast, and comfort him. I didn’t do any of these, instead, I slipped out of doors and walked the road back to the house with Sarah.

“What’s on your mind?” Sarah asked, noticing my mood.

“Levi, he looks very tired.”

“Why wouldn’t he be? His mother and daughter have been his life over the past five years. He would probably be worse if Sharon was the one in that hospital,” Sarah replied.

“She is a bundle of joy, isn’t she?” I smile, recalling Sharon’s ready smile.

“He loves her more than life itself.”

“What is the matter with Mrs. Hammock?” I asked.

“The doctor says it’s precautionary, more like a bed rest than anything else.”

“Can’t she have that in her home? The doctor could come in daily to take a look at her,” I said, confused.

“They ran further tests yesterday, trying to rule out everything since the spike that caused her slump seems to have no specific cause the doctor could see,” Sarah explained.

We walked on in silence, Sarah stealing a few glances at me out of the corner of her eyes. I paused by the hedge of flowers that marks Hugh Warton’s cycle. In the middle
